Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Not All Heroes Wear Capes

We are fully committed to assisting those who wish to become Foster or Adoptive Parents. In its simplest terms, it is an opportunity to make a real difference in the life of a young person.

In fact, when prospective foster parents attend our Rockland County Department of Social Services Foster Parenting Training, we let them know from the onset of their journey that we value them and see them as true heroes. We call them heroes because they open their hearts and their homes to children who have experienced trauma, neglect, abuse and/or maltreatment. Our foster parents are like a lighthouse during a dark storm; what could be more noble than providing a much-needed loving home to a child?

Here in Rockland, we recognize that each and every child has the fundamental right to grow up in a safe and supportive home. Fostering a child is an opportunity to make a real difference in a young person’s life.

As for what it’s like to be a foster, one of our veteran parents Vicki Weiner says, “the day-to-day aspects of fostering can be difficult; however, over time you begin to adapt, and you are able to see change in the children.” She also noted that one of the rewards from fostering are the relationships she has been able to build with children and their families.

The Rockland County DSS Home Finding Unit is always looking for individuals who are willing to open their homes to children in need.

We strongly encourage all who are interested to please visit our website at fosterrockland.com.

Additionally, we hold virtual Informational Meetings the 4th Wednesday of every month at either 2:00 or 5:30 pm via Microsoft Teams. If interested, you can contact either Demetrius Travis at (845) 364-2198 or Ana Duran at (845) 364-3527 to request the invite.
